Baby Sleep Hours by Age

Newborns (0–3 months) need 14–17 hours of sleep a day, infants (4–12 months) 12–16 hours including naps, toddlers (1–2 years) 11–14 hours and 3–5 year olds 10–13 hours (American Academy of Sleep Medicine and National Sleep Foundation).

Sleepy cues

Rubbing eyes or ears, yawning.
Looking away, losing interest in play.
Fussing for no clear reason.

Put your baby down at the first cues: overtired babies settle harder.

Safe sleep

Always on the back, on a firm flat mattress.
No pillows, toys or loose blankets; use an age-appropriate sleeping bag or wrap.
A comfortable room and one more layer than an adult.
A baby monitor helps when your baby sleeps in another room.
