Prenatal Appointment Checklist: Questions to Ask and Details to Bring

Quick answer: Bring an up-to-date list of your medicines and supplements, important health and pregnancy history, questions you want answered, and your insurance or clinic details. Your prenatal team will tailor the visit schedule and tests to your needs; no online checklist replaces that conversation.

Before the appointment: make a one-page note

Pregnancy appointments can feel full, especially the first one. A simple note helps you remember what matters most. Write down your current concerns, the date of your last menstrual period if you know it, any symptoms you want to discuss, and the names and doses of medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. Include allergies, ongoing conditions, previous operations and relevant family history. If information is incomplete, say so rather than guessing.

Questions to ask your maternity team

You do not need to ask everything at one visit. Choose the questions that affect your next decision or help you feel safe and informed.

  • Who should I contact during office hours and after hours if I have a concern?
  • Which tests or scans are being offered, what are they for, and when will I receive results?
  • How will you adapt the care plan to my medical history, preferences, language or access needs?
  • Which medicines or supplements should I continue, review or avoid? Please check each one with my clinician or pharmacist.
  • What symptoms mean I should call promptly instead of waiting for my next scheduled visit?
  • How do I reach the clinic, where should I go, and what happens if I miss or need to reschedule an appointment?
  • Can my chosen support person attend, and are interpreter or telehealth options available?

Discuss your everyday life, not only test results

Your appointment is also a place to talk about sleep, mood, work, movement, food, travel, family support and practical barriers. If cost, transport, privacy, childcare or appointment timing makes care difficult, tell the team. They may be able to explain local options or adjust how follow-up is arranged. You can bring a support person, ask to pause, request plain-language explanations and ask for time to consider a choice.

Understand tests and choices

Screening tests estimate the chance of certain conditions; they do not always give a diagnosis. Ask what a test can and cannot tell you, what follow-up might look like, whether there are alternatives, and how your decision affects the next steps. You are entitled to clear information before agreeing to a test or procedure. Local pathways differ, so use your own clinician's advice rather than copying another person's schedule.

After the visit: close the loop

  1. Write down the next appointment date and the agreed action items.
  2. Ask how and when results will be shared, and whom to contact if you have not heard back.
  3. Update your question list as new concerns arise; it is normal for priorities to change.
  4. Keep your maternity notes and emergency contact details somewhere easy to find.

Common questions

How often are prenatal appointments?

There is no single schedule that fits every pregnancy or health system. Timing can depend on your history, current needs, local guidance and the care model available. Ask your maternity team what is planned for you and why.

Can I ask about mental wellbeing or private concerns?

Yes. You can request a private conversation with your clinician. If you feel unsafe or need urgent help, contact local emergency or health services rather than waiting for a routine visit.

What if I forget a question?

Send it through the clinic's approved contact channel or write it down for the next visit. For urgent or worsening symptoms, use the urgent contact instructions provided by your maternity team.
